Giving Tuesday: Cycling Organizations You Should Learn More About

Cyclists are a famously generous group of individuals. On Giving Tuesday, we’re taking a moment to highlight some of the cycling-specific non-profits worth learning more about and investing in for a bright future for everyone on bikes.

Suffice it to say, there are many worthy causes this year and many of which have been pushed to the brink due to the pandemic. From lost revenue without fundraisers and an ever-growing demand from families facing hardship, local food banks and charitable organizations have put out the call to clothe, house, and feed our neighbors during this time of tremendous need.

That hardship extends to cycling organizations as well. Much has been made about the cycling boom sparked by the pandemic, many of the non-profit trail association and advocacy groups haven’t benefited, even as more cyclists mean more need for education, safety instructions, and representation in local governments on how to meet the needs of new riders.

There are many, many organizations in cycling that are doing important work to address important issues in our sport, including diversity, safety, access, and more. These organizations are driving real change and making the future of cycling as a mode of transportation, recreation, and competition brighter each and every day. Consider learning more and donating, or take the time to share a group you support with us.

League of American Bicyclists. Their advocacy work at the national level reflects similar efforts at the state level across the country. Perhaps the most important program for the League of American Bicyclists this year has been their diversity and equality effort, designed to bring more women and people of color into cycling by offering programs and focusing on communities that could most benefit from more access to bikes.

Michigan Mountain Biking Association. MMBA works on behalf of a number of local-level affiliate chapters to represent the sport of mountain biking in Lansing. Advocating for trail access and protection, additional funding, and sharing resources and information to partner chapters have made MMBA a vital part of Michigan’s cycling scene.

People For Bikes. One of the strongest advocacy groups in the country, People For Bikes offers an array of resources for families, businesses, and communities. In 2020, they’ve prioritized diversity and inclusion, as well as taking the lead on a number of important issues concerning eBikes. They also provide a number of resources on cycling safety and participation that serve as valuable tools for all sorts of fellow advocacy groups.

If you feel comfortable financially, consider supporting one of these organizations, or donating to one of the cycling-specific groups in your area that you value. Every contribution counts, and together, we’ll make 2021 a stronger year for bikes!
